CHED and DepED Declare Suspension of Classes

Manila, Philippines – Executive Secretary Atty. Paquito "Jojo" Ochoa, Jr. has declared the suspension of classes at the tertiary level in Metro Manila on Wednesday, due to tropical storm "Juaning."

Ochoa's decision was based on the recommendation of the Department of Science and Technology- Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (DOST-PAGASA) and the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).

Presidential spokesman Edwin Laciera made the announcement through his Twitter account, @dawende.

The Department of Education (DepEd) earlier suspended classes on Wednesday in pre-school, elementary, and high school in Metro Manila and other areas affected by the storm.

The Palace and DepEd orders mean that classes in all levels are suspended Wednesday in the National Capital Region.

Students and parents were waiting for the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) to issue a statement for universities and colleges.

Under CHED Memorandum Order 19, Series of 2005, classes in colleges and universities are automatically suspended when an area is under storm signal number 3.

The CHED order said the authority to suspend classes falls on heads of universities and colleges if either signal number 2 or 1 is hoisted over an area.
